Del.icio.us is my Best Friend

I’ve been doing a lot of bookmarking lately … actually, I’ve always bookmarked a ton of sites, and my organizing strategies have never kept up with the growing list of sites I’d like to revisit. In fact, I don’t even think it would be possible to visit all of the sites I have bookmarked even if I had a week of nothing but “free” time. That’s where del.icio.us comes in … When I first started bookmarking sites, I simply used the “Add to Favorites” or “Bookmark This Page” link found in my favorite browser of choice. Soon I found my list of bookmarks to be completely overflowing, unorganized, and difficult to navigate. The whole point of adding a bookmark to a site is to make it easier to find later … like when you’re reading a book and want to mark the last page you’ve read so you know where to pick back up again when you’re ready to keep reading. The problem with having too many bookmarks in your browser, however, is that it defeats the whole purpose of having bookmarks in the first place! So I did what I thought made sense at the time … I decided to take the time to “organize” my bookmarks. The problem was that I found several folders and sub-folders containing links to sites that could really fall into multiple categories. For example, a Photoshop tutorial site that also has free brushes … should it go in the “Photoshop > Tutorials” folder, or the “Photoshop > Brushes” folder? I suppose I could simply bookmark the same site twice, but remember that I’m trying to simplify my bookmarks, not make them more difficult to navigate! Then there’s the problem of finding a site you know you’ve bookmarked before, but you just can’t remember where you put it … or even worse, you’re trying to find a site you’ve bookmarked on your home computer, but you’re using a friend’s computer! Good luck! That’s the beauty of del.icio.us … you can add as many “tags” to a site as you like, and you can even add your own detailed notes or description of a site for future reference. Whether you’re using your home computer, a laptop, a friend’s computer, or you’re in an internet caf in the airport, wherever you have access to the internet, you can pull up your list of bookmarked sites! Better yet, even if you can’t exactly remember a particular site you may have bookmarked in the past, you can search your own del.icio.us links using the logical keywords (or tags) you would have added to the site when you created the link. Plus, del.icio.us helps you find new sites that others have bookmarked using the same tags. If you’re not using del.icio.us to bookmark your sites, what are you waiting for? Create an account at del.icio.us, clear out your disorganized bookmarks, and discover the power of social bookmarking! Dont even compromise on dedicated hosting service for domain names only. Your hi fi website development and the complex website design will be of no use on a cheap unreliable host.
